Fiddler on the Roof's show stopper, "If I Were a Rich Man", sung by main character, Tevye, reflects his aspirations. It was inspired by a 1902 Sholem Aleichem monologue in Yiddish, Ven ikh bin Rothschild (װען איך בין ראָטשילד - lit. “If I were a Rothschild”), and from passages in Aleichem's 1899 short tale The Bubble Burst. from WIKIPEDIA: A repeated phrase throughout the song, "All day long I'd bidi-bidi-bum," is often misunderstood to refer to Tevye's desire not to have to work. However, in an interview, lyricist Sheldon Harnick said he invented syllables that might give the effect of Chassidic chanting. The first person to play Tevye, Zero Mostel, replaced the syllables Harnick had written with ones Mostel thought would be more authentic. (Note the Fiddler On the Roof soundtrack was recorded just weeks before the musical opened on Broadway.)
