One Pulaski drugstore keeps nickel Coke — and a way of life — alive. A drugstore with a working soda fountain serving five-cent Cokes sounds like something pulled from a museum of Americana. But this is not a museum. This is Reeves Drug Store and Soda Fountain, sitting quietly on the square in Pulaski, Tennessee — doing what it has done since 1892. There was a time when every small town had a family pharmacy. You knew your pharmacist by name. You called them your druggist. If you were too sick to come in, they delivered your medicine — for free. And many of those pharmacies doubled as soda fountains, where lunch, prescriptions and a scoop of ice cream all came together in one place. Most of those places are gone. Reeves is not. Independent pharmacies across the country are struggling, squeezed by corporate chains and rising costs. But Reeves has survived more than 130 years — not because of a marketing plan, but because of a philosophy. Store leaders say customers here are not numbers. They are family. Friends. Neighbors. That idea has guided every owner who has taken the keys since the late 1800s. And it may explain why generations of families keep coming back. Customers who once sat at the counter as kids now bring their own children — and grandchildren — pulling tables together, lingering over lunch, soaking up something that feels increasingly rare. The nickel Coke may be the most surprising tradition, but it is not the only one. Children of pharmacy customers can receive tokens for a free soft drink or ice cream cone — a small gesture that speaks volumes about how Reeves sees its role in the community. Employees admit some of these traditions may not make financial sense in today’s retail world. But they say history, nostalgia and human connection still matter here. On a recent weekday morning, the store was busy — prescriptions being filled, lunches served, conversations flowing. Not a relic. Not a museum. A living, breathing piece of American life. Reeves Drug Store has endured by remembering how it started — and by refusing to forget what it stands for. SEE MORE: https://fox17.com/amazing-america/ten... _______________ Follow! Like! Share!
