Promoting democratic values in the English language classroom

Schools, as miniatures of society, often reflect this diversity, bringing together students of different origins and cultural backgrounds. Education therefore has a key role in shaping informed citizens, with European values and principles such as respect, tolerance and inclusiveness, fostering skills and attitudes that promote the cultivation of a European identity. The European Union, focusing on unity through diversity, is a prime example of this dynamic, as it actively takes action to defend human rights and democracy through a democratic and holistic education. In this paper, we present a lesson plan based on the Competency Framework for Democratic Citizenship, which aims to cultivate both democratic citizenship and basic skills in English. It was successfully implemented in a primary school in the region of Attica, using the storytelling technique, while focusing on democratic competences, namely valuing human dignity and human rights, respect, civic-mindedness, tolerance of ambiguity, empathy and co-operation skills. The evaluation of the effectiveness of the proposed teaching plan was conducted through a short interview with the class’s English teacher, while the students were asked to fill in a self-evaluation sheet after the implementation of the teaching intervention.
