Suicide car bombers blasted through the concrete walls surrounding the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad on Monday, injuring about five people inside the hotel. The crews repaired a breach in the blast walls around the Palestine and Sheraton hotels. One of the bombs had blown a hole in the wall, enabling a cement truck packed with explosives to enter the compound and explode, causing considerable damage to the Palestine Hotel, which houses offices of The Associated Press, Fox News and other media organisations. As the U.S. military death toll in the Iraq war nears the landmark total of 2,000, the Iraqi death toll is unknown, but estimates range much higher. Most of the victims were people driving or walking through the area. None of the dead in Monday's attack were journalists or members of the US military. A US official in Washington said there were no known deaths inside the hotel, which is home to foreign contractors as well as journalists. The nearby Ishtar Sheraton hotel also suffered some damage in the bombings. On Tuesday, Iraqi and U.S. forces refortified the hotel complex, with crews repairing a breach in the blast walls around the Palestine and Sheraton hotels. One of the bombs had blown a hole in the wall, enabling a cement truck packed with explosives to enter the compound and explode, causing considerable damage to the Palestine Hotel, which houses offices of The Associated Press, Fox News and other media organisations.
