In this episode of Expert Witness, the UN's humanitarian coordinator Denise Brown warns of 'horrendous' conditions in Sudan’s Darfur 1,000 days into the brutal war between the Sudanese armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary. Speaking to Middle East Eye News Editor Sondos Asem on 14 January, following UN missions to conflict-affected areas, Brown, the UN’s Sudan chief, said aid agencies were uncovering “horrendous” conditions as limited access is negotiated to previously unreachable locations. She warned that the UN had found malnutrition rates among children in Um Baru in North Darfur to have reached 53 percent. “This is three times higher than the standard emergency levels. I've actually never seen anything like this,” she said, speaking from Port Sudan. “We can expect deaths within days, for sure weeks,” Brown said. “Frankly, it’s quite devastating.” TAGS: Sudan, RSF, UN, Darfur, Famine Support stories that matter.
