The National Youth Council (NYC) has launched its Civic Education Engagement at the #BeFree Youth Campus, under the theme "Activate Your Vote: Shape Your Tomorrow Today." The initiative aims to empower young people by providing a platform for learning, dialogue, and participation ahead of the Regional Councils and Local Authorities Elections slated for 26 November 2025. The Council emphasises that youth's involvement is essential for building an informed, inclusive, and actively engaged society. NYC Interim Board Chairperson Dr. Kennedy Kariseb stressed that the programme is not an election campaign but an effort to encourage young people to understand their role in shaping Namibia's future. He urged the youth to take up space in the political, social, economic, and religious spheres. "We should remember our role as the youth does not end in provoking. The much-needed hard work and civil engagement actually come after the elections. Our collective task, individually as the youth of this country but also collectively as the National Youth Council, is to ensure that we continuously engage our leaders and sensitise them on the integration of the pressing needs of youth in this country and the mainstream of all issues of young people in our country." Delivering the keynote address, former First Lady Monica Geingos called on young Namibians to hold leaders accountable and recognise their power in decision-making. She reminded youth that leadership is not something to wait for, saying their vote represents a personal blueprint for the kind of future they want to build. Geingos added that posting about change online is not enough, and that young people must also vote for it. "Your vote is your pen. It's the most powerful tool that you have to move from being a critic, a social media warrior, or a keyboard warrior, as you guys call yourselves. So, going from being a critic on the sidelines to being an architect of your community's future and wielding this tool effectively requires one thing above all else, and that's civil education. And that's why this programme is incredibly important." The launch also featured reflections from young attendees, who highlighted the importance of active youth participation in the upcoming elections and the role of informed decision-making in strengthening democracy. The civic education engagement will continue across all 14 regions until November 26th, encouraging young Namibians to learn, participate, and take ownership of their collective futures. #NamibiaVotes2025 #NBCNews #nbcdigitalnews #nbcDSTV282 #nbcGOtv20 #nbcPlusApp
