Young people from the ||Kharas Region want leaders who will actively empower them and solve challenges, not just for political gains. These were the remarks by the National Youth Council's regional coordinator for ||Kharas, Drusilla Abed, during an interview with NBC News. NBC News gauged youth form around the ||Kharas Region ahead of the Regional Councils and Local Authorities Elections. Abed said that the youth want elected leaders to focus on solving youth unemployment and skills development. "This year's election is the one that the youth are most eyeing because we have critical issues, and one of them, which I feel is a ticking time bomb, is unemployment, and we really want our leaders to look into it. And I really want our leaders to look into how to empower these young people, and when I speak about empowering, I mean activities and how they can link these young people without using politics, but for the betterment of the youth. So yes, unemployment is definitely one of the issues in the ||Kharas Region we want our leaders to look into." A local youth activist from Keetmanshoop, Mohammed Frederik, shared how they are motivating peers to participate in the elections. "We have come a long way with so many organisations trying to get the information out there to tell the people about the importance of voting and the importance of taking part, so there is still a lot of work to do. But I think we have come so far. We got a lot of young people to come forth and get their voter cards, and the conversation that we are hearing is that they are excited to go to the polls." A student representative council member from the University of Namibia's southern campus, Elisabeth Silas, said she does her civic part by sharing information and motivating fellow students to vote in the elections. "I have been doing most of the information sharing because information sharing is the barrier that makes people not do certain things, so I made sure that all the voting information I come across, I share with my students." Silas, who shared her excitement to be voting, wants the incoming elected leaders to implement the country's National Development Plans. #NamibiaVotes2025 #NBCNews #nbcdigitalnews #nbcDSTV282 #nbcGOtv20 #nbcPlusApp
