Hoo wee, what a ride. Despite the issues Etrian Odyssey 1 may have, I do think it's a better game than some people give it credit for. (Though the remake really improved upon a bunch and is probably a friendlier way of experiencing this game if you only had to pick one version of EO1 to play. Of course good luck getting that now with the eshop outta commission.) Most of it holds up nicely, and there's some unique bits of interesting design that the later games phased out. Oh yeah. So my Landsknecht will be using an axe in some fights with an oil imbued, as that is a lot more damage than using Allslash sometimes. Though I forgot to refresh the Blaze Oil in this fight after Etreant got rid of the buff. As for Etreant himself, holy moly the dude is a big pain with no defense! He will absolutely demolish your party with his massive strength stat. Just look at what he did to my Landsknecht at the start of the fight! Like all the maingame bosses, he's pretty susceptible to binds. Unfortunately what makes this boss hairpulling is the fact that he enrages if you have 5 or more buffs on the team. Basically a single Troubadour song will cause Etreant to decide that your party must die right there, as he'll wipe all your buffs and then annihilate your party with Cyclone, or use Growth to heal himself. However if you manage to bind any one of his body parts, he won't do this, and you're safe to use buffs as long as the bind lasts. However bind at least 2 of his body parts and he'll just dispel them and then go to town using Cyclone on your party. Pretty much the most common way to beat him is to use Immunize + 1st Turn and then keep spamming that to trap Etreant in a loop where he keeps trying to wipe your buffs but can't kill you thanks to Immunize. Obviously that wasn't an option for me here, so I opted to make use of binds and then use the turns I gained from stalling him out to kill him. Of course I'm not gonna hop on over to Etrian Odyssey 2 just yet. After all, there's still the post-game to go through...
