Best Buddies nonprofit in Orlando, FL for Spectrum News 13. [[ANCHOR INTRO]] A local nonprofit is making a major difference in the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities—helping them find friendship, meaningful work, and confidence as community leaders. Best Buddies in Central Florida continues to grow its mission across seven counties—and this week, the organization celebrated its annual Gala in Orlando, raising critical funds to keep those life-changing programs going. [[TAKE REPORTER]] We spoke with Kaylyn Palmer, Area Director here at Best Buddies in Orlando, and she talked to me about their Champion of the year gala and how those fundraising are raising efforts for people with ID or intellectual developmental disabilities in Central Florida. [[SOT]] “And my fiancé encouraged me to apply for Best Buddies, he has autism. We’re getting married this weekend so yeah!” KAYLYN PALMER is AREA DIRECTOR FOR BEST BUDDIES IN ORLANDO, STARTED AS A VOLUNTEER—WORKING ONE-ON-ONE TO HELP PEOPLE, LIKE HER NEW HUSBAND- WITH IDD SUCCEED. BUT PALMER SAYS THIS YEAR, THE DEMAND FOR JOB SUPPORT AMONG PEOPLE WITH IDD ISN’T BEING MET BY LOCAL BUSINESSES WILLING TO HIRE. [[SOT]] “Just more people are seeking jobs overall, but especially people with disabilities- and what that means is we just must put in more work to get more local businesses on board with hiring someone with a disability…SO just compared to last year. the increase was very big.” IN FACT, WORK THEIR NUMBERS FOR JOB PLACEMENTS IN ORLANDO TRIPLED. FROM THE FRONT OFFICE TO THE BACK, THE MESSAGE IS CLEAR—THIS WORK MATTERS MORE THAN EVER. [[SOT]] “Potentially could be one of the most important times that we go, because it is very unsure of what’s going to be happening in the future”. [[TAKE VO]] THAT GROWTH IS SOMETHING SENIOR PROGRAM MANAGER BRITTANY BENNETT SEES EVERY DAY. SHE WORKS WITH LOCAL BEST BUDDIES SCHOOL CHAPTERS—AND NEXT MONTH, SHE’LL LEAD A TEAM TO TALLAHASSEE TO ADVOCATE FOR CONTINUED STATE FUNDING. THE ORGANIZATION’S ANNUAL TRIP TO THE CAPITOL GIVES STUDENTS AND PARTICIPANTS A CHANCE TO SHARE THEIR STORIES—NOT JUST ABOUT JOBS AND OPPORTUNITIES, BUT ABOUT THE FRIENDSHIPS THAT CHANGE THEIR LIVES. [[SOT]] “I have my own buddy in our adult program He’s in our jobs program. His name is Wils, and he has down syndrome, and he’s like truly one of my best friends. He just makes me a better person. ... Because a lot of times when people think of people with disabilities, they say yeah they’re overlooked for jobs, but they don’t think about their friendship aspect of it. And everyone needs a friend.” THE Best Buddies International JOBS PROGRAM REPORTS THAT AN ESTIMATED 85 PERCENT OF ADULTS WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES DO NOT HAVE A PAID COMMUNITY JOB. BEST BUDDIES WORKS TO CLOSE THAT GAP—CONNECTING PARTICIPANTS WITH EMPLOYERS COMMITTED TO INCLUSION. FOR MANY, IT’S MORE THAN JUST EMPLOYMENT—IT’S ABOUT BUILDING CONNECTIONS THAT LEAVES AN IMPACT. [[SOT]] “ A lot of times when people think of people with disabilities they think yea they’re overlooked for jobs but they don’t think about the friendship aspect of it. And everyone needs a friend, regardless if u have a disability or not. So people don’t really think about that.” RECENTLY, BEST BUDDIES RAISED 134,000 DOLLARS AT THEIR NOVEMBER 7 “CHAMPIONS OF THE YEAR” GALA, WHICH HOSTED 150 ATTENDEES IN SUPPORT OF THEIR PROGRAMS. BENNETT SAYS THAT FUNDING, ALONG WITH STRONG LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS, IS CRUCIAL TO KEEP THEIR JOB AND FRIENDSHIP PROGRAMS THRIVING—HELPING PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES SUCCEED BOTH SOCIALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY. [[SOT]] “I think my personal connection to this is something that keeps me motivated. Every day is when I go home to my fiancé and soon to be husband and I’m like you are a part of the reason I do this every day.” [[TAKE OUT]] AFTER SPEAKING WITH AREA DIRECTOR KAYLYN PALMER SHE GAVE ME THIS (SHOW AND TELL)) AND EXPRESSED JUST HOW MUCH THOSE FUNDRAISED FUNDS REALLY MEAN FOR THE NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION. SHE SAID SHE RAISED OVER $130,000 DOLLARS AT LAST WEEKS EVENT, AND THAT IS GOING STRAIGHT INTO THEIR JOBS LIVING AND FRIENDSHIP PROGRAMS FOR PEOPLE WITH IDD. IN ORLANDO, IM KV, SPECTRUM NEWS.
