For a decade, the fight against antibiotic resistance (AMR) has been a top priority. Over 250 teams from around the world participated in the £8 million Longitude Prize on AMR, searching for a way to rapidly diagnose bacterial infections and prescribe the right antibiotic. Challenge Works, the prize organizers, is thrilled to announce the winner: the PA-100 AST System from Sysmex Astrego. This innovative test promises to revolutionize UTI (urinary tract infection) treatment, replacing the wait for lab results with a point-of-care solution. Previously, patients with UTIs faced days of discomfort while waiting for lab results to determine the most effective antibiotic. "Just-in-case" prescriptions were often the norm, contributing to the rise of AMR. The PA-100 AST System changes this. Using a tiny urine sample and a smartphone-sized cartridge, it can identify a bacterial infection in just 15 minutes and pinpoint the right antibiotic within 45 minutes.
