EA-6B Prowler Jamming Specialist: Cutty Like a Pig, But Deadly like a Lion. The EA-6B Prowler is a twin-engine, mid-wing electronic warfare aircraft that was used by the United States Navy and Marine Corps for nearly five decades. The aircraft was designed to provide electronic jamming and other electronic countermeasures during airborne missions, and played a crucial role in conflicts such as the Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Prowler was first introduced in 1971 as an upgraded version of the EA-6A Intruder. It was developed by Grumman Aerospace Corporation (now Northrop Grumman) as a replacement for the A-3 Skywarrior and A-4 Skyhawk electronic warfare aircraft in the Navy's inventory. The aircraft was designed to provide support to ground troops and during air strikes, and was equipped with a wide range of electronic warfare equipment, including radar jamming, communications jamming, and radar warning receivers. The Prowler was powered by two Pratt & Whitney J52-P-408 turbojet engines, which provided a maximum speed of 673 miles per hour and a range of 1,090 miles. It had a crew of four, including two pilots and two electronic countermeasures officers. The aircraft was also equipped with an in-flight refueling probe, which allowed it to extend its range and stay on station longer. The Prowler was a versatile aircraft, and was used in a variety of roles throughout its service life. It was used to jam enemy radar and communications during air strikes, and to provide electronic protection for friendly aircraft and ground troops. The aircraft was also used to gather electronic intelligence and to conduct electronic reconnaissance. The Prowler's electronic warfare capabilities made it an essential asset to the Navy and Marine Corps, and it was widely used in conflicts such as the Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom. In the Gulf War, Prowlers were used to jam Iraqi radar and communications, and to provide electronic protection for coalition aircraft. In Operation Iraqi Freedom, Prowlers were used to jam Iraqi radar and communications, and to provide electronic protection for coalition aircraft. The Prowler served with distinction for nearly five decades, but was retired from active service in 2019. The aircraft was replaced by the EA-18G Growler, an upgraded version of the FA-18F Super Hornet that is also used for electronic warfare. The Prowler will always be remembered as an iconic electronic warfare aircraft that played a vital role in the defense of the United States and its allies.
