A race against the tide to look around Fingal Island and the Point Stephens Light (Lighthouse). Access to the island and lighthouse is via the tidal Fingal Spit which can be done either at low tide or via boat. The Lighthouse and 'Keepers' Cottages were commissioned in 1862, the need was required to ensure mariners did not enter the bay mistaking it for the much larger Port Stephens. At least 24 shipwrecks took place in the area during the 1800's with over 20 lives lost. In 1991 the last caretaker left the island, shortly after the 'Keepers' Cottages were burnt down in a suspected vandal/arson incident. Today the Island, Lighthouse and Cottage Ruins make for an interesting look into Australia's early maritime history. There are also views of the surrounding bays and Shark Island. Fingal Bay is roughly 213 km from Sydney or just under 3 hours drive. The walk is close to 3.10 km each way leaving from the Surf Life Saving Club carpark. Note: Crossing the Fingal Spit can be dangerous at the wrong time/heavy weather and 17 people to date have lost their lives doing so. #abandoned #urbex #explore #seeaustralia #portstephens #lighthouse #nelsonbay #fingalbay #urbexaustralia #ruins #hikingadventures #hikingaustralia #exploresydney #exploreaustralia #australianhistory #daytrip #seeaustralia #sandspit #explorepage #adventuretime #hiddengems
