“I just felt like this was a love letter to Black boys” — Go behind-the-scenes with Letitia Wright, who’s now written, directed and produced the coming-of-age fantasy drama, “Highway To The Moon”. Here, she discusses the casting process, and her motivations for making her extraordinary first short film, a moving reflection on the experiences of young Black men whose lives have been abruptly snatched away. The short is a spiritual and visual journey rooted in themes of young Black joy, love and unity. Shot in Arizona and London, Highway To The Moon imagines what happens to the souls of young Black boys after death, and across three realms: Earth, the “in-between” and space. Wright was inspired to create the film in response to the ongoing knife crime crisis in London, and to spark important conversation around dissecting its root causes.
