Francisco Benita Computing Walkability Indicators with Open Data 2024-05-27, 10:00–11:30, Room 2 In this workshop we will show how to assess the pedestrian-friendliness of urban neighborhoods using Google Colab and open data sources. Participants will navigate the process of computing walkability indicators, including street connectivity, residential density, built-up area, and terrain elevation, within isochrone polygons. This is a journey to analyze walkability in Southeast Asian cities through a comprehensive Jupyter Notebook tutorial. Participants will explore diverse open-source datasets extracted from OpenStreetMap, WorldPop, Microsoft Building Footprints, and ALOS Global Digital Surface Model. The tutorial will employ Python libraries including Rtree, OSMnx, GeoPandas, Matplotlib, GeoPy, and NetworkX. This workshop assumes basic proficiency in Python and offers a unique opportunity for participants to explore the powerful toolkit for computing walkability indicators. The practical focus will center on isochrone polygons, providing a deep understanding of urban fabric in Southeast Asian cities. Importantly, the techniques presented are adaptable to any city worldwide. We adopt a cloud-based computing approach ensuring a hassle-free experience for participants.
