The two most popular instruments amongst the Indo-Fijian community are the baja, which is the harmonium, and the dolak, which is a drum. The sitar is an instrument that is not very prominent amongst the Indo-Fijian community, though it is an amazing one. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Ms. Sharmila Mathur, a professor at the University of Alberta, who is an avid sitar player and has built her career around music. She speaks about the sitar and her journey in becoming ever connected with it. She recounts a couple of the most vivid memories she has as she transitioned from India, across nations, and finally to Edmonton in pursuit of developing her career. We end the interview with an original piece she has recently composed. I hope you all enjoy watching this interview, learning about the sitar, and hearing it's beautiful sound. My utmost gratitude to Ms. Sharmila for sharing her knowledge, art, and music with us!
