On the 25th of September of 2022, the West Chester Railroad would celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the first tourist trains to run over the former Pennsylvania Railroad route in 1997. Operating over the West Chester Branch of SEPTA trackage, the route provides passengers with lush scenery along the Chester Creek and rich history of the area as the trains passes by historic stations, signals, overhead catenary poles, and much more. Along with the historic route, the trains are powered by an assortment of rare diesel locomotives from Alco and EMD. Former Canadian Pacific #1803, an Alco RS-18 in a striking yellow, black, and gray paint scheme, powers the train that consists of former Reading and Pennsylvania Railroad coaches. Along with the regular train that makes a round trip from West Chester to Glen Mills station to celebrate the 25th anniversary, the passengers could enjoy 1997 prices and short yard tours. Sit back and enjoy this short production from Keystone Rail Productions! The route of the West Chester Railroad was apart of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Central Division on the West Chester and Phoenixville Branch, running along the Chester Creek. At it's peak back in the day, the Pennsylvania Railroad operated nearly 24 passenger trains a day to West Chester, three freights, and additional special trains. In 1968, Market Street station was demolished, yet the infamous Penn Central and SEPTA still operated passenger trains until 1986. The line would lay dormant for another decade until a group of rail enthusiasts wanted to restore the line, and operate the first tourist trains in 1997. Nearly 25 years later in 2022, the line serves as a established heritage line in the suburbs of Pennsylvania. West Chester Railroad 1803 is an Alco RS-18 built for the Canadian Pacific Railway by the Montreal Locomotive Works in 1960. After years of service, it was retired in 1998 and shortly thereafter purchased by the West Chester Railroad and has been in service on the tourist line ever since providing the motive power for many of the railroad's excursions.
