Only about a half hour from Philadelphia, PA, a scenic heritage line operates. The West Chester Railroad would be operating a single 90 minute round trip excursion from Market Street in Chester County, all the way to Glenn Mills, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Today's train would consist of GP38 No. 7706, Pennsylvania Railroad B60b "Express Messenger" baggage car No. 9275, and two Reading Railroad MUs as coaches. The train would begin at West Chester Railroad's station, and stop at Glenn Mills Station for a half hour layover. The train would then return to West Chester Station. The route was apart of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Central Division on the West Chester and Phoenixville Branch, running along the Chester Creek. At it's peak back in the day, the Pennsylvania Railroad operated nearly 24 passenger trains a day to West Chester, three freights, and additional special trains. In 1968, Market Street station was demolished, yet the infamous Penn Central and SEPTA still operated passenger trains until 1986. The line would lay dormant for another decade until a group of rail enthusiasts wanted to restore the line, and the rest is history. Today, the line serves as a established heritage line in the suburbs of Pennsylvania. EMD GP38 No. 7706 was built in 1969 originally for the Penn Central Railroad. Following Penn Central's abrupt closure, the locomotive was then taken into Conrail's fleet of locomotives in 1976. In the mid 1990s it was purchased by PECO Energy and later used by the Exelon Corporation to work in the Cromby Generating Station in Phoenixville, PA. In 2012 the unit was donated to run on the West Chester Railroad as one of the more modern locomotives in West Chester's fleet.
