President Michel Suleiman reappointed Saniora on Wednesday following a decision late on Tuesday by the parliamentary majority to back him. However the opposition has said it is against Saniora's reappointment, calling him unacceptable and a hindrance to national reconciliation. Feuding factions have agreed to form a national unity government under an Arab League-brokered deal that resolved a prolonged political crisis. "Today's political undertaking has a well defined goal that is that hopefully we can reconcile all the various factions and represent all in Lebanon, like we have agreed on in Doha: one government of national unity which will keep civil peace and maintain national unity that was threatened in the past and affected Lebanon," Saniora said. People were later seen celebrating Saniora's reappointment on the streets of Beirut's Sunni neighbourhood of Tarik Jeddi Saniora, a pro-Western veteran banker and candidate of the anti-Syrian coalition, is a long time trusted aide and business associate of slain former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Saniora served as junior finance minister and finance minister during most of Hariri's 10 years as prime minister between 1992 and 2004, and was a pillar of the late premier's multi (b) billion dollar reconstruction programme. After Hariri was assassinated in February 2005, Saniora was often seen teary-eyed at the side of Hariri's son, Saad, or at Hariri's grave in downtown Beirut. Despite his credentials, Saniora's appointment as premier may be disappointing for some. Saniora, 65, was widely criticised by many because of his tendency to impose taxes to generate public money and reduce a budget deficit.
