Various of Parliament speaker Nabih Berri in talks with Suleiman STORYLINE Lebanon's new president has started binding consultations with lawmakers on forming the national unity government agreed to under an Arab League-brokered deal that resolved a prolonged political crisis which had pushed Lebanon to the brink of an all-out war. President Michel Suleiman's discussions with legislators from both the anti-Syrian parliament majority and the Hezbollah-led opposition are expected to last throughout Wednesday. They follow a decision by the pro-Western majority to back Fuad Saniora to reassume the post of prime minister in Suleiman's new government. Suleiman has polled lawmakers on their choice for prime minister, but after the majority's decision Tuesday, Saniora is guaranteed to get the position. Both Saad Hariri, Parliament majority leader, and his Druze ally Walid Jumblatt said on Wednesday Saniora was officially nominated for the Prime Minister post. This will be a new opportunity for all of us. It is essential for us Lebanese that we start a new page especially after the crises we have collectively been through as a nation," Hariri told journalists. Hezbollah chief negotiator Mohammed Raad said the Shiite political organisation "will refrain from naming a candidate for Prime Minister."
