eLTER responds to the challenge of understanding the complex interactions between people and nature and the human impacts on ecosystems over the long term. Through its research infrastructure and transdisciplinary expertise, eLTER enables the development and application of evidence-based solutions for the wellbeing of current and future generations. https://www.elter-ri.eu/ eLTER presents: Pinios Hydrologic Observatory - Greece The Pinios Hydrologic Observatory, located in central Greece, is a key research facility dedicated to studying hydrological and environmental processes within Thessaly, one of the most productive basins of Greece. Established in 2015 by the Hellenic Agricultural Organisation - Soil and Water Resources Institute, in collaboration with the Forschungszentrum Jülich Research Center, the observatory focuses on the Pinios River catchment area, a critical region for understanding water resources and their management in Mediterranean climates. The observatory spans an extensive area, including diverse landscapes such as mountainous terrains, river valleys, and forests. Its research aims to monitor and analyze hydrological cycles, including precipitation, soil water, and groundwater dynamics. By employing advanced monitoring equipment, the observatory collects detailed data on water quality, soil moisture, and hydrological changes, providing valuable insights into the region’s water resources and environmental health. The Pinios Hydrologic Observatory plays a crucial role in assessing the impacts of climate change and land use on water availability and ecosystem sustainability. Its findings support water management strategies and contribute to broader scientific knowledge on hydrology in Mediterranean environments. Through ongoing research and collaboration, the observatory helps inform policies and practices aimed at preserving water resources and enhancing environmental resilience in the region.
