SAMS Annual Newth Lecture 2022

It has been 150 years since the Challenger Expedition set sail on its epic journey of discovery that laid the foundation for the modern discipline of marine science. Among the five 'scientifics' onboard the naval corvette was the young Canadian Scot John Murray, who was to go on to edit the 20 tome Challenger Reports in the decades following the expedition. Professor Nicholas Owens, SAMS' 10th Director, has had a long-standing interest in John Murray, the Association's founding director, and will share his knowledge and enthusiasm for the man who first coined the word 'oceanography' in our 2022 Annual Newth Lecture that follows on from the SAMS AGM.
