Inside Monkton Gardens: East Lothian’s Family-Run Market Garden

A few months ago, we had the pleasure of meeting Alexander and Elizabeth, the owners of Monkton Gardens in East Lothian, and seeing how they’ve turned their passion for gardening into a thriving business. Monkton Gardens is a family-run market garden that supplies fresh fruit, vegetables, and herbs to local bakeries, restaurants, and cafés, taking “locally grown” to a whole new level. What began as their grandparents’ farm has since been transformed into a flourishing market garden, a journey that truly took shape during the Covid era. What started as a hobby, with the support of their parents, has now grown into a successful enterprise. Using our Caledonian Horticulture Green Goodness and Kelpie Compost, Alexander and Elizabeth continue to nurture their no-dig beds, greenhouse, and polytunnel, helping their business grow quite literally from the ground up.
