A Beautiful Turn of Mimosa Wood

Join me as I take on the challenge of turning a large piece of fresh mimosa wood harvested from a fallen tree after a recent ice storm in January 2024. I've never worked with mimosa before and I'm a bit skeptical of how well it will turn given its coarse grain patternl. Nonetheless, I'm determined to try to transform this wood into a live edge oval platter using basic woodturning techniques. I take you through the full process from mounting the wood onto the lathe to shaping the outside curve and establishing a tenon to flip the piece around. The mimosa proves difficult to cut smoothly no matter what tool or angle I use, with sapwood tear out and fibers gumming up the cutting edges. Persistence pays off and I achieve better cuts when I get into to the denser heartwood section. With a few precarious cracks and voids appearing both on the surface and deep within, finishing this piece will require strategic stabilization and artistic resin fills. As mimosa continues to surprise me with its challenges, I'm anxious to see the final result once thoroughly dried and refined.
