For some reason, many people have never heard of Sri Lanka and if that is you, you're about to discover an amazing country that you will want to visit for your next vacation. Sri Lanka is a small Island Nation just South of the coast of India. The country has just over 23 million people is only 435km long by 240km wide. If you want a guide to visit Colombo, click here: https://viator.tp.st/EmTQCY6N For our first day in Sri Lanka, after landing at the Colombo airport the night before, we decided to explore the city on our own as we usually do. So we took a tuktuk or rickshaw from our hotel to the Gangaramaya Temple which was a beautiful way to start our exploration day. This is the oldest Buddhist temple in Colombo and no matter your belief it is worth visiting especially since it is only Rs400 per person. From there, we jumped on another tuktuk to the Floating Market Pettah, a place not really worth visiting as most of the shop seemed to be closed permanently. With that being said, at the end of the floating market we found a small restaurant called Patirana Food Corner where we were able to try Sri Lanka's national dish, Chicken Kottu. This quickly became a favorite for us! If you ask us, the best things on this side of the world are local markets and Colombo Sri Lanka is no different! This is why we spent a big portion of our day walking around Pettah Market which is the most popular and largest open air market in the city of Colombo. From shopping to street food and of course the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque also known as the Red Mosque or Colombo the Pettah Street Market has something for everyone. If you are looking for the best view point in the city, you have to make it to the top of the Lotus tower, 351m above ground. This observation deck provide an amazing 360 degrees view of Colombo. You can see almost to India, but not quite... You can even book this experience with a meal here: https://viator.tp.st/RaTL6YvL If you make it to sunset, then you have to visit Galle Face Beach, the number one spot where locals gather at the end of the day to enjoy the ocean, some street food, the sunset and even to fly some kites. Finally, we ended up at a very popular local bar called The REPUBLK but... We were way too early! The peri peri chicken pizza was good though. Even if this was only day one, we can already tell how much we are going to LOVE Sri Lanka! What a great first impression of Colombo.
