Ethical Persuasion for More Influence with Patrick van der Burght, who is a business partner of Dr Robert Cialdini, who wrote the book ‘Influence - The Psychology of Persuasion’, which sold 7 million copies and is considered by many top CEOs to be the best business book of all time. Patrick is a Founding Member of the Cialdini Institute, the only active Cialdini Institute Licensed Trainer in Australia and New Zealand. He has been teaching the science of ethical persuasion to professionals and teams since 2000, which helps them accelerate towards goals, and build strong relationships, whether it be in sales, advertising, leadership or team management. Patrick also co-authored the book ‘How to Hear YES More Often’ in 2024, and has his own podcast ‘Ethical Persuasion Unlocked’! Key Moments in the Episode 03:15 Patrick van der Burght’s introduction on working in Australia as a wholesale sales representative for scuba diving equipment, managing three states and spending much of his time on the road. When he began promoting a new Australian-made dry diving suit brand, he quickly discovered the brand’s reputation had been damaged. In the previous year the manufacturer had switched to a cheaper inner membrane supplier, causing the suits to fail and forcing retailers to replace them all. As a result retailers initially laughed off the product and refused to stock it. Around then he discovered the science of persuasion through the work of Robert Cialdini. With guidance from a business coach, he applied behavioural science principles to rebuild trust and reposition the product. Within 18 months the once rejected suit became the market leader. This experience led him to become a Cialdini-licensed trainer, where he now teaches people how to ethically be more persuasive using behavioural science.
