Live performance in Brescia, Italy October 17, 2021. Performed by the Dedalò Ensemble, conducted by Carlos Ocaña. "Canzoni Antifonali" is a three-movement, instrumental composition composed during the time period of the COVID-19 pandemic that explores the concept of "music from a distance." In this case, distance may be understood to be both spatial and temporal. Spatial in the sense of distance and physical placement/relationship of the performers, and temporal because the musical style makes reference to the past. Composed in what might be termed "Neo-Renaissance" style, Canzoni Antifonali draws inspiration from the Italian Renaissance tradition known as antiphonal music. Created for the majestic churches and cathedrals of Italy, these works were composed for performers in two or more groups that were placed in different, often rather remote parts of the performance space. "Canzoni Antifonali" may be understood to be the composer's homage to this great tradition of Italian art music. It seems particularly appropriate and relevant to draw upon a musical style that is founded on the very idea of spatial distance to explore the meaning and effects of the "social distancing" that have become a part of our everyday lives during the present pandemic. NOTE: "Canzoni Antifonali" is an adaptation of the composer's 2018 composition for chamber orchestra, choir and trumpet ensemble, "Hodie Canamus" premiered in Orvieto, Italy at the Orvieto Duomo.
