A site survey of the haunted road. The road in question (B4104) runs between the village of Meriden and the city of Coventry in the English Midlands (approx 7.5 miles). It is an ancient road, a stretch of which is haunted. Heading east out of Meriden the road rises sharply up a hill, Meriden Hill, which holds a beautiful church called St Laurence - itself Saxon in origin - nearly 1000 years old (circa 1050AD). However, the human inhabitation of Meriden Hill predates Saxon times. It was an Iron Age settlement, inhabited by the Celts. Its also possible that Bronze Age people also lived here. Meriden Hill affords spectacular views of the local countryside which is known as The Meriden Gap. It is this stretch of the Meriden - Coventry road which is haunted. Not by its Celtic or Saxon forebears but by a more recent event. During the 1700's the road was used by many coach and horses. During one dark and stormy night a coach, which was speeding along the road, crashed into a swamp - killing all. Nobody survived the crash - it killed the coachman, all the passengers, even the horses. Whether they all died in the crash or drowned slowly in the mire is not known (neither are the names of the dead). But all perished. It is this Phantom Coach which haunts this stretch of road. On dark and stormy nights (just like the one which caused the crash) the Phantom coach has been witnessed several times over the last 300 years. When the wind howls and the trees groan and creak in the gale, local people have reported the sound of thundering hooves along this stretch of road - followed by the horrific sound of a coach crashing and the following screams of both humans and horses as they met their death in such a violent manner. On rare occasions some people have claimed to have actually seen this Phantom coach - a phosphorescent luminescent apparition - which comes screaming out of the darkness, the coachman furiously whipping the spectral horses forward - whilst the ghostly glowing faces of those inside the coach stare mournfully out of the windows. It is not known if these Ghosts notice the living. EXERCISE GREAT CAUTION IF YOU CHOOSE TO VISIT THIS STRETCH OF ROAD AT NIGHT ! The elevation of Meriden Hill makes it prone to strong winds, especially during storms, and most of the road is unlit - the modern cars that use it travel very fast and accidents are not uncommon.
