SAVOY CHRISTMAS MEDLEY - fox-trot { 0:00 } SAVOY CHRISTMAS MEDLEY - one-step { 2:52 } Midnight Minstrels (Debroy Somers Band) - vocalists: un-named male quartet Regal MR430 (9 October 1931) issued December 1931 This is my seventh seasonal upload of a version of the SAVOY CHRISTMAS MEDLEY. Links to the previous six are listed below. The two medleys of traditional tunes were arranged by Debroy Somers whilst director of the Savoy Orpheans (from pre-October 1923, preparing the band, to c. May 1926). Strangely, it was the Savoy Havana Band who got to record them (in September and October 1924) under their director/violinist Reg Batten, using Columbia’s mechanical/acoustic recording system at Clerkenwell Road. Having left the Savoy and formed his own band, Somers recorded the medleys for Columbia in September 1929 using the Western Electric system. The venue was Columbia’s studios in Petty France, Westminster (established when electric recording was introduced in 1925). Somers had recorded the medleys in August 1927 at the Central Hall, Westminster, but those takes were rejected. So, this October 1931 recording was Somers’ second issue for Columbia (but for their lower-price Regal label) and used the company’s own recording system (developed by Alan Blumlein to circumvent Western Electric patents and the attendant annual licence fee and per-record pressing-royalty). It was released in December 1931 and cost 1/6. However, Somers’ 1929 recording for the Columbia label was still being pressed and sold for 2/6 (66⅔% more). It is interesting that Columbia chose Somers’ 1929 recording for the 1940s, wartime, reissue. The Midnight Minstrels was Regal’s pseudonym for a number of dance bands: Stan Greening and Debroy Somers, principally, plus Billy Cotton and Maurice Winnick.
