SAVOY CHRISTMAS MEDLEY [0:00] SAVOY SCOTTISH MEDLEY [3:19] The New Mayfair Orchestra, Ray Noble HMV C2003 (30 June 1930) Debroy Somers arranged a number of themed ‘medleys’ of established tunes during his years at the Savoy hotel leading the Orpheans (October 1923 to May 1926). They must have been very popular because not only did he record them, other bandleaders did. Brian Rust lists eleven recordings of the SAVOY CHRISTMAS MEDLEY and fourteen of the SAVOY SCOTTISH MEDLEY. Ray Noble and his HMV house band produced this 12-inch record for the Christmas and Hogmanay of 1930/31. Thankfully, Noble resisted the temptation to have jolly vocals for the Christmas songs; but, surely, someone was having a Sassenach p**s-take with the whooping and screams in the Scottish reels! (Starting 4:07) Yes, the CHRISTMAS MEDLEY label is smaller (73 as opposed to 86 mm) and the groove spirals close to the label. Yet the SCOTTISH MEDLEY, with the larger label, plays about 30 seconds longer! And for those interested, the record sounded best using a 4 mil tip; as opposed to the 3.5 and 3.0 mil tips. Happy Christmas 2015 – and don’t put lit candles near your shellac.
