This Video is part of a series created for the 'Enhance Adaptation and Resilience using Nature-based Solutions Micro Qualification'. This was funded by the Kiwa Initiative and conceived of and managed by The Pacific Community (SPC). Auckland University of Technology researchers, along with NUWAO researchers, and people from Griffith University and Ecosystem Services Consultants put the teaching materials together and ran a pilot course in late 2025 through Griffith University. Filmmaker Nick Monks created these films. This film is 'Nature-based Solutions for Empowerment in Oceania' Framing -This video investigates GEDSI consideration in nature-based solutions in Oceania. -Pacific cultures have refined nature-based adaptation over thousands of years, drawing strength from traditional knowledge systems that remain central to community resilience today. These practices already embody the principles of sustainable climate adaptation. -Lasting solutions emerge when initiatives are grounded in local cultural systems and processes. When projects respect these frameworks, they strengthen rather than replace the knowledge and systems that people already trust. -Culturally appropriate inclusion of women, youth, elders, and those often overlooked, may create stronger, fairer, and more enduring outcomes. Empowering all participants ensures that adaptation reflects the full social fabric of Pacific communities. -Projects succeed when they align with community priorities and honour cultural context. Respect for local decision-making, traditions, and values keeps engagement meaningful and helps to ensure that projects last beyond external involvement. Key messages -Resilience lives in knowledge passed through generations. -Just adaptation begins with cultural priorities and values, not project aims. -When every voice is heard, communities thrive. -Respect sustains change, culture holds it in place.
