Abhidharma (Supreme Science) is one of the most important Buddhist philosophical topics, along with the Perfection of Wisdom and the Middle Way doctrines. Probably the most important and relevant aspect of Buddhism is its generous treatment of the nature of mind and various mental factors according to Sutra, Shastra and Tantra. In the Sutras, Udanavarga and Dhamamapada have chapters on the nature of mind which are similar to those described in Dzogchen teachings. The fifty one mental factors described in the Shastras, especially in Abhidharma literature written by Vasubandu, ought to be studied and adopted by modern psychology to help with understanding the mind. In Tantra, discussion of the eighty subtle natural conceptual thoughts are too intricate a discourse on the subject, so people need to wear 4D glasses to understand their nuances. In this Unit, Lama Choedak Rinpoche will use excellent resources to explain all these mental factors as a metacognitive study of the mind which is otherwise beyond the understanding of everyday sensory perception.
