We finished our Peter Auto season with a very pleasing podium at Estoril in Simon and Kate Orebi Gann's amazing Morgan SLR. Closing out a fantastic season, 2 new tracks, fighting hard, the smallest team in the series punched well above its weight to finish P2 in the Championship. Simon, Kate and Brett and the amazing, reliable and fast car gave us a season to remember. The icing on the cake was to find out we had won The Index Of Performance. I had to look it up to understand what it actually is – there’s quite a history behind it - particularly at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was introduced to level the playing field by rewarding cars not just for outright speed but for efficiency, reliability, and competitiveness relative to their design. Here's an overview: Origin and Concept: • The Index of Performance was first introduced at Le Mans in 1959. • The goal was to give smaller, less powerful cars a chance to compete against faster, larger-engined rivals by evaluating how well a car performed relative to its potential rather than its absolute performance. • It considered a car’s engine size (cubic capacity) and expected speed. Smaller, less powerful cars had lower expectations and were given coefficients that adjusted their times to make them competitive with more powerful vehicles. How It Worked: • Each car was assigned a coefficient, calculated based on its cubic capacity and sometimes its weight. • During the race, the car’s distance traveled was compared against this coefficient. • Cars with smaller engines could "overperform" by exceeding expectations based on their design, while larger-engine cars were judged more harshly against their potential. Importance at Le Mans: • The Index of Performance award was highly prestigious during the mid-20th century because it highlighted innovation and efficiency, not just outright speed. • It was especially appealing to manufacturers of smaller cars, like Porsche and Alpine, who could showcase their engineering prowess even if they couldn't compete for overall victory. • The index encouraged advancements in lightweight materials, fuel efficiency, and engine reliability—key factors in endurance racing. Decline and Legacy: • Over time, the focus of endurance racing shifted more towards outright speed and advanced technology. By the 1970s, the Index of Performance became less significant and was eventually phased out at Le Mans. • However, the spirit of the index lives on in modern motorsport categories that emphasize efficiency, like the Efficiency Index in some electric vehicle races or specific awards at endurance events. In its prime, the Index of Performance was a fascinating and innovative way to celebrate engineering ingenuity and reward the clever optimization of performance, making it an integral part of endurance racing history.
