Racing at Spa is always a privilege, and the second round of the 2025 Peter Auto Historic Racing series was no exception. The track's demanding layout and unpredictable weather made it an enormous treat, but also a formidable challenge. Friday morning kicked off with free practice, where our focus was on bedding in the brakes and scrubbing the new tyres. With only one set available, we had to be meticulous, minimizing usage to ensure they lasted through the weekend. By evening, the Sixties Endurance race loomed, and qualifying mirrored the race by running into the dark. I took the wheel first, warming up the car before pushing for a lap time. Glancing at the VBox oled, I was gobsmacked to see the times unfolding. The previous best lap I could find at Spa was 3.01.171, but I was well ahead of that mark. Despite some traffic, I managed a 2.59.311, knowing there was more to come if I could find a clear lap. On the next attempt, everything clicked, and I posted a 2.58.343—a new unofficial Morgan SLR lap record! I knew I could have shaved off a few more tenths, having made a small mistake at Des Fagnes, but I was eager to give Simon his time in the car, so I pitted to hand over. Peter Auto's system of averaging driver times placed us in P3 initially, which later became P2 due to another car's penalty. A fine starting position for the race ahead. Saturday evening saw Simon take the wheel as Spa delivered its trademark pouring rain and bone-chilling temperatures. The spray was something else, a spectacle that both awed and intimidated. Simon was in the thick of it, driving brilliantly, until a small error sent him into the gravel at La Source. We feared the race was over, but a live recovery got him back on track, and he lapped well up to the pit stop window, just after half race distance. When I jumped in, the conditions were dire. Puddles were forming everywhere, and the spray was immense, reducing visibility to a minimum. My first pass by the pits revealed we were well over a lap behind and dead last. But I put my head down, determined to make up ground. The car, thanks to Brett's superb setup, responded magnificently despite the atrocious conditions. On the last lap, I pushed harder than ever, and to our surprise and delight, we crossed the line in P3—a podium finish that felt like a victory given the circumstances. Once again, we prevailed in the face of adversity, and that P3 kept us in the Championship lead. A huge thank you to Simon and Kate for their unwavering support, and to Brett for providing a car that performed flawlessly under pressure. Looking ahead, Dijon is next. It's a marvellous old-school track that every racing enthusiast should experience at least once. Stay tuned for more adventures!
