Record fish, Russians, sawdust scandals and Chris Yates - the end of an iconic fishing tackle shop?

DAVIS TACKLE in Christchurch, Dorset is one of the UK's most historic and iconic fishing tackle shops, having served countless anglers for 80 years and being closely associated with famous fishing destinations such as the Royalty fishery, or Throop on the Dorset Stour. I first visited this classic old tackle den in the summer of 2024, with my mate Andy from Sheffield, and we were immediately struck by the timeless quality of the place, with its old glass cases, beamed ceiling and giant, wall mounted pike. We were there at the beginning of another fishing adventure, to finally fish from the legendary Bridge Pool punt on the beautiful chalk stream that is the Hampshire Avon, and that turned out to be one of the best day's fishing of my life (and also made for The Magic of Fishing's most popular video so far!). Nigel and his wife Helen, who bought the shop in the hope of continuing its rich fishing history, have run Davis Tackle for 20 years and recently decided it's time to retire. Not only that, but in an emotional Facebook post in January 2025, Nigel announced there was unlikely to be a successor and Davis Tackle is therefore set to close in mid-March (the end of the traditional river coarse fishing season). Upon hearing this news I knew I had to visit again, during a weekend fishing trip to Throop, and spend some more time in the shop with Nigel, talking about his experiences, the history, the famous customers, and his many other fantastic fishing stories. Despite having only visited three times, I already felt at home there and I share this video in the hope of capturing the essence of the place, Nigel's special tales and - who knows - maybe even alerting a potential buyer to the possibility of extending the shop's life to a century...
