This week Intel basically admitted the factory strategy was a mistake and CEO Lip Bu Tan said the chip maker would slow construction of the New Albany plants and halt plans to build factories in Europe. He told employees there are no more blank checks. State local and federal governments have written checks to Intel to help the project. The federal government paid Intel at least one and a half billion dollars. Ohio has promised $600 million dollars in construction grants. The plant was supposed to open this year, then Intel delayed the project to 2030. Now that date looks premature. WOSU’s Mike Thompson and the Columbus on the Record panel also looks at efforts to rein in Ohio’s rapidly rising property taxes, whether Ohio’s private school voucher program is constitutional, if SNAP benefits should pay for sugary drinks, and at what’s changed five years after Ohio’s nuclear bailout bribery scandal surfaced.
