Have I ever told you the YAK-9 is my favourite warbird from WWII along with the La-7? Now you know! I had already seen both in the flesh at the Central Air Force Museum in Monino (Russia) but I had never had the pleasure to see an airworthy one until now... and flying!!! :D Not just that, but it so happens that this particular Yak-9UM has ended up in Sabadell's Airport (next to Barcelona), very close to where I live so now I have relatively easy access to this gorgeous and super-rare WWII warbird which, again, happens to be my favourite one... what a treat! A sign of fate or something, hahaha! Despite almost 17000 units having been built, most were scrapped after the war for raw materials so it's hard to see any of these in one piece nowadays. This one has been reconstructed from the original parts of many. I am told pretty much the entire aircraft is original but the engine has been replaced by the american Allison V-12, that although still expensive to operate and maintain, it has a better service life and has more power compared to the original soviet engines the type was designed to operate with. This flight was filmed and documented during the open-doors event of FPAC (Fundació Parc Aeronàutic de Catalunya) at Aeroclub Barcelona-Sabadell, the 16th of October of 2022, the first public appearance of the Yak-9 at Sabadell. And just so you know, the owner is offering tourist flights with it, so if you are interested, keep reading! ABOUT THE YAK-9: The Yakovlev Yak-9 (Яковлев Як-9) is a single-engine, multipurpose fighter aircraft used by the Soviet Union and its allies during World War II and the early Cold War. It was a development of the robust and successful Yak-7B fighter. It started arriving in Soviet fighter regiments in late 1942 and played a major role in retaking air superiority from the Luftwaffe's Fw 190 and Bf-109G fighters during the grand Battle of Kursk in the summer of 1943. The Yak-9 was manoeuvrable at high speeds when flying at low and medium altitudes and was also easy to control, qualities that allowed it to be one of most produced Soviet fighters of World War II. It was produced in different variants. The Yak-9U had a more powerful engine and improved aerodynamics. The Yak-9 remained in production from 1942 to 1948, with 16769 units built (14579 during the war). The Yak-9UM (modernized version) has been stripped of guns, decreasing the wing loading and features an american Allison V-12 engine with a whooping 1500 hp.
