"As Valentine’s Day, the day of love, approaches, Luang Por Anan raised an incident that occurred in Western Australia, when a family experienced a kayaking accident in which strong waves and wind blew their kayak out into the sea until it capsized. The mother then decided to send her 13-year-old son named ‘Austin,’ who was the strongest, to swim back to shore to seek help. Austin had to decide to remove his life jacket in order to swim faster, amidst darkness, cold water, and fear of sharks. What enabled Austin to survive and save his family was the use of ‘mindfulness’ and ‘wisdom.’ He overcame fear by changing his emotional state to think about joyful things, and managed his physical strength by alternating swimming styles—freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke—to conserve energy at intervals, until he was finally able to reach the shore and notify authorities to rescue his mother and siblings who were floating 14 kilometers from shore. Luang Por compared Austin to a ‘little Bodhisattva,’ one who possessed self-sacrifice and perseverance in accordance with the principle of the ‘Four Bases of Success.’ This story was compared to the great compassion of the Buddha, and serves as a reminder on Valentine’s Day for us to reflect on the love of our parents, and also to apply Austin’s determination in our meditation practice." 🌏 Now Available in Multiple Languages [French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish] You can now listen to this Dhamma talk in other languages using YouTube’s Audio Track feature.
