Vienna, Austria — Roll & Toast Records is thrilled to announce the discovery and restoration of one of progressive rock's most enigmatic lost albums: the self-titled debut from fictional Viennese ensemble ÄSOP, recorded between 1974 and 1979 but never officially released until now. For decades, whispers circulated among European prog collectors about a mysterious Austrian quintet whose sound rivaled the theatrical grandeur of Genesis, the technical virtuosity of Yes, the pastoral mysticism of Jethro Tull, and the keyboard-driven symphonics of Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Those rumors can finally be put to rest. The band's sound is anchored by elaborate mellotron arrangements, intricate time signature changes, and a gift for melody that recalls the most inspired moments of early Genesis. Yet ÄSOP possessed something uniquely their own—a Middle European melancholy, a philosophical depth, and an almost literary approach to composition that speaks to their Viennese heritage. Keyboardist Klaus Bergmann layers Hammond organ, Minimoog, and mellotron with the precision of a classical composer, while guitarist Stefan Waldner weaves acoustic fingerpicking with soaring electric leads that echo both Steve Howe's complexity and Steve Hackett's emotional restraint. The rhythm section—bassist Otto Freund and drummer Michael Ziegler—provides both thunderous power and delicate subtlety. Lead vocalist and flutist Peter Lichtmann delivers lyrics in English with an earnest, theatrical flair reminiscent of Peter Gabriel at his most mystical.
