In the process, I will also demonstrate the right way to wind the watch. It is important that new and existing Rolex owners know the correct way to do this in order to protect the watch from any unnecessary damage. To illustrate the winding and time setting processes, I will use various Rolex models, including the Datejust II, Submariner, Daytona and GMT Master II. How to Wind a Datejust and Submariner To wind the Rolex Datejust II and Submariner watches and set their dates correctly, we can use the same technique. This is also the same exact technique that is used to wind/set the Yacht-Master I. This technique is illustrated on the video for the Submariner. To wind the Rolex Submariner, the first thing you need to do is to unscrew the crown by turning it counterclockwise. When the crown pops out, it is in the winding position. Now it is time to start winding the watch. Even though the watch has an automatic function that self-winds the timepiece using the natural motions of the wearer's body, when the watch has not been worn for a while, it requires manual winding to kick off it's automatic operation once more. The way I recommend that you wind the Submariner is by using two fingers at the same time. Winding the crown with one finger would put unnecessary stress on the stem that is attached to the crown. I recommend that you also wind the watch by turning the crown around 15 times to make sure that enough tension is placed on the spring to keep it running. From that point on, the automatic function of the watch will take over. Can a Rolex Watch be Wound Backwards? One common question customers that come or call our store ask is whether or not a Rolex can be wound backwards or counterclockwise. The reality is that when a Rolex watch is wound counterclockwise or backwards, it doesn't do anything. Only when the watch is wound forward or clockwise, it is done correctly. When you wind a Rolex in the right direction, you'll also be able to feel and hear the related tension on the crown. After you wind the watch, it is time to set the date to the correct value. To set the date, pull the crown out until it clicks. This first click will indicate that the crown is in the date-setting position. By turning the crown forward, the date value will begin increasing, one day at a time. Once you get to the desired date, you are done and can move on to setting the watch on time. To do this, you need to pull the crown out one more time. When the crown clicks, you can continue to turn it until the hour and minute hands are at the desired positions. On this video, we set the time on the Submariner to 8:30. Once you are done, it is time to return the crown of the watch to its original position. First, push the crown all the way in and, while holding it there, screw it back by spinning it forward or clockwise. There's no need to over-tighten the crown and damage the watch. Once the crown is snug, you are done. The Rolex Daytona – A Simpler Process The next Rolex model you'll see on the video is the Rolex Daytona. The process for the Daytona is similar to that of the Submariner and Datejust, but much simpler. This is because the Daytona does not have a date function, so we only need to set the time on the watch. As before, we need to unscrew the crown (counterclockwise), wind the watch (15 clockwise turns on the crown), and let the automatic function take over; then you have to pop the crown out to set the watch on time. Finally, screw the crown back and wear your luxury watch proudly! Setting the Rolex GMT Master II on Time – Dual Timezones Working with the GMT II is similar, but an extra step is required, since the watch comes with a dual time (two timezone) function (the GMT is wound using the same technique described earlier for the other Rolexes). For the GMT Master, I like to set the second or dual time (blue arrow on the watch) first. This is done by pulling the crown out to the outermost setting and turning it appropriately. After the dual time is set (10 o'clock on the video), the date and time (11 o'clock on the video) can be set back to back by pushing the crown in one notch and turning it until the desired date and time are displayed.
