The "Engels" military airfield in Russia’s Saratov region was hit by Ukrainain forces last week after Russians rolled out 60 containers with missiles to an open area, aviation expert Valery Romanenko revealed. Noting that the ammunition depot, fuel depot and technical and operational part are the usual elements of any military airfield, the expert stressed that in particular, both Tu-160 and Tu-95MS missile carriers and Tu-22M3 bombers are based at Russia’s Engels airfield. That is the reason why cruise missiles and aerial bombs were stored at this airbase. "Overall, such airfield infrastructure is logical. The only thing is that Russians managed to roll out more than 60 containers right onto the site near the warehouses," the expert said. In his words, these containers had missiles, which were used by Russians for technical inspection, among other operations. When Ukrainian analysts saw such a "spectacle" on satellite images, it was "simply impossible" to refrain from reacting, Romanenko explained. He also noted that the Ukrainian strike on the airbase would not have a strong impact on Russians’ massive missile strikes as Russia has many such warehouses and has established serial production of the corresponding missiles. The Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian airfield "Engels" in Saratov region last week caused a powerful blast and a secondary detonation of ammunition in the area. Later it was revealed that the drone strike definitely hit a warehouse with cruise missiles Kh-555 and Kh-101 for bombers based at the airfield. Military expert Anatoly Khrapchinsky beleives that "Engels" is the only airfield that stores most of the strategic missiles flying over Ukraine. According to Khrapchinsky, Russian aircraft are equipped there in order to return to other airfields from where they carry out combat attacks over Ukraine. In his words, there are warehouses with weapons and fuel and lubricants at the "point" of the strike. "There are a sufficient number of reservoirs directly at the airfield. This is provision for Russian strategic aircraft. It would be good to deprive them of a couple of strategic aircraft as this is a non-renewable resource. Just like the aircraft that may be in Dyagilevo air base in Ryazan, which we can reach with "Neptunes", explained Khrapchinsky.
