PERP Intentionally PIT Trooper in High-Speed Chase

Incident Report: On July 8, 2025, I, Trooper Jonathan Hernandez (ID#1657), was on routine patrol in Lee County, Florida. I was operating my FHP patrol vehicle Dodge Challenger (FHP2028). My patrol vehicle was prominently marked with agency insignia and was equipped with a full light bar. At 1:28pm, I was parked on the median of I-75 at MM 146 observing NB traffic. At this time, I observed a silver Chevy Silverado traveling at a high rate of speed, weaving through traffic, and swerving. I visually estimated the vehicle speed to be 100mph in a posted 70mph zone. I activated my agency-issued Laser and confirmed the vehicle speed to be 98mph as it traveled on the inside lane of I-75 passing multiple vehicles. After observing the violation, I came out of the median and began overtaking the silver Chevy. The vehicle began changing lanes to the outside, where it almost rear-ended a slower moving pickup truck pulling a trailer in the outside lane. After I activated my emergency lights to make a traffic stop for the observed violations, the vehicle was braking erratically, varying speed, and driving between lanes. The driver activated the right turn signal on as if he was going to stop on the right shoulder but immediately began increasing speed and changing lanes. I immediately activated my sirens and notified the FMRCC that I was in pursuit of a reckless vehicle and provided my location, speed, direction of travel, traffic conditions, vehicle description and license plate. We continued NB on I-75, reaching a speed of 102mph while weaving through traffic as the driver was fleeing from me. As we approached MM 151, Trooper Benson Prosper (ID#1547) joined the pursuit as the lead vehicle. As Trooper Prosper began to overtake the silver Chevy and started to position himself for a PIT, the driver avoided the PIT by slamming his brakes and intentionally driving his car into Trooper Prosper’s patrol vehicle. The driver struck the right side of his vehicle with the left side of Trooper Prosper’s, pushing him into the right shoulder. Trooper Prosper was able to continue on pursuit as we continued north in the outside lane of I-75 reaching speeds of 107mph. As Trooper Prosper was positioning himself to attempt a PIT, the driver once again slammed on his brakes, went around Trooper Prosper and struck the left side of Trooper Prosper’s vehicle with the right front side of his car. Trooper Prosper’s vehicle was disabled after the impact, and the driver continued north on the right lane of I-75 reaching speeds of 102mph, even after losing the right front tire from the impact. We continued NB on I-75, approaching exit 157 (Tuckers Grade) where Trooper Reilly (ID#1336) joined the pursuit as the lead officer. The driver took the exit, ran a stop sign, and attempted to travel west on Tuckers, when Trooper Reilly was able to contact the vehicle on the left side and push it into the grassy area at the NW corner of the intersection of Tuckers Grade and I-75. Trooper Reilly and I conducted a felony stop on the vehicle. The driver again attempted to flee by pressing the gas pedal of his vehicle, but the Chevy wouldn't move. We gave loud verbal commands to the driver to keep his hands up. The male driver jumped into the front passenger seat and exited the vehicle. We immediately ran towards the driver as he exited the car, I grabbed him from his left arm and went to the ground, where he was placed in handcuffs. I immediately observed an odor consistent with that of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the mouth and facial region of the male. Trooper Matthew Davis (ID#1757) arrived on scene as backup. The driver was identified by his Florida DL as Kevin Donald Reardon II. Mr. Reardon was placed in the back of Trooper Davis’ patrol vehicle, and EMS was called to the scene. We requested a tow truck, and I conducted a vehicle search. While conducting the search of the vehicle, I located 6 empty bottles of liquor in the driver door compartment, 4 full bottles of the same liquor in a “99 Brand Party Pack” box, located in between the driver seat and the center console. I also located 3 burnt marijuana cigarettes in the center console and drug paraphernalia. On the left rear passenger door, I located two bottles of prescribed medication. One was Oxcarbazepine 300mg and the second one was Gabapentin 300mg. Mr. Reardon was transported by EMS to Fawcett Hospital for further treatment. At the hospital, I was informed that Mr. Reardon needed a CAT SCAN and I went with the hospital staff to the exam room since Mr. Reardon was in handcuffs. While conducting the CAT SCAN I was informed by medical staff that Mr. Reardon appeared to have a bottle of pills inside his rectum. Medical staff informed me that Mr. Reardon had a blood alcohol level of 0.152. At 6:00 pm, Mr. Reardon removed a bottle of pills from his rectum. At 8:11 pm, Mr. Reardon was medically cleared and transported to the Charlotte County Jail by Trooper Reilly.
