In this (rather long) vlog, we discuss the main THREE paradigm for navigating the guitar fretboard. One big takeaway here: if you've been focusing a lot on ONE element of fretboard geography, now might be a good time to open your horizons. So, what are the three "elements" or paradigms? 1 Vertical (ie positions) 2 Horizontal (ie single string) 3 Diagonal (blend of both above) This is a long vlog, so I suggest you grab the guitar and try out some things with me while I go through them :) The main thing I encounter while coaching jazz guitarists is that they spend A LOT of time on positions. And virtually no time on the two others. In this case, I always encourage students to do a little blitz on one string at a time (or two strings even!) The results in phrasing are immediate. It's important to spend some time pondering and finding solutions to our "note location issue" on the fretboard ... BUT, it's even more important (CRUCIAL) to actually experiment and ... -FEEL how it feels in your body / hands / fingers -HEAR how it sounds with your ears Ultimately, total freedom on the guitar comes from knowing and using ALL the tools. Not any precise paradigm or limitation! :) More free lessons on the blog: JazzGuitarLessons.net/blog FREE 6-Part Training on Concierge Method: https://mastery.jazzguitarlessons.net/ Subscribe on YouTube: / jazzguitarlessonsnet
