Dayton, Nevada, was initially known as Gold Cañon and was a resting area when snow made travel through the Sierra Nevada’s too grueling. The settlement took off in 1849 following Abner Blackburn’s discovery of gold, the first documented discovery in the state. The town had more than 200 miners working the canyon by 1851, making this the first non-native American settlement in Nevada. Today, homes make up a majority of Dayton, from large ranches to brand new custom homes like Santa Maria Ranch lining the Carson River. The Dayton Valley Golf Course is an 18-hole course north of the Dayton Airpark displaying beautiful views of the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. Arnold Palmer designed this course that is now the host of the longest standing PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament in the U.S. Silver Oak Golf Course is only 20 minutes away, with its course winding through the high desert surrounding Carson City. Lyon County School District serves Dayton beginning with Dayton Elementary School, educating pre-K through sixth grade. Nextdoor is Dayton Intermediate School, home of the Sun Devils which teaches seventh and eighth graders. On the opposite side of the intermediate school is Dayton High School, where the Dust Devils have excellent sports facilities.
