🍎Too often we demonize insulin and carbohydrates without fully understanding them or how they work. I’ve been guilty of this myself. - The truth is that insulin (and carbs) are not inherently bad. What matters is insulin sensitivity. To be insulin sensitive means your body effectively utilizes carbs and neither your blood glucose nor insulin levels remain elevated for very long. This is a good thing. This is the system functioning how it should. The opposite end of the spectrum is insulin resistance (IR). IR is the inability for our body to effectively utilize carbs resulting in blood glucose remaining elevated and your body continuing to pump out insulin. This is not a good thing. In fact, IR is a primary contributor to many chronic health conditions. - I like to look at insulin sensitivity like a pressure gauge. There are things that increase “pressure” or insulin resistance (those items on the left of the infographic) and there are strategies you can take to relieve the “pressure” or promote insulin sensitivity (those items on the right of the infographic). - Being able to effectively monitor your insulin sensitivity pressure gauge by being conscious of how many strategies from either side of the infographic you are using as well as subjective feelings will play a huge role in improving your health. - For example, you have been overeating carbs for a while, not exercising, and are feeling a little sluggish, then you may need to deploy strategies such as carb restriction or fasting to relieve some of that “pressure”. - This will be a highly individualized experience and it will take time for you to understand how your body behaves and what is best for it. But it will be worth it!
