In this video we will take a look at Hebrews 12:2 and learn how it is commonly used to wrongly teach that Jesus is the author and finisher of our personal individual faith. Many have used this verse to teach doctrines such as Unconditional Election (God must grant someone faith in order to believe and if He doesn't grant them faith then they can't be saved because they are not part of God's elect and so aren't able to believe), Limited Atonement (Jesus only died for His elect), Irresistible Grace (God's grace can't be rejected and is forced upon His elect without them having any say in the matter), and Perseverance of the Saints (Eternal Security/Once Saved Always Saved). The confusion with this verse arises by reading something into the text which isn't there. Notice how in the King James Version the word "our" is in italics. It reads Jesus is the author and finisher of "our" faith but is actually saying that Jesus is the author and finisher of faith (in a general sense), not of our personal individual faith. Yes, God gives to all men a measure of faith, but we must exert that faith and we must walk by faith which we are all capable of doing. If we don't step out in faith and obey the gospel it isn't because God doesn't love us or didn't choose us to be saved, but it's because God has given us the ability to choose. This verse needs to be understood in its proper context. It is actually conveying that Jesus is the author (chief captain) and finisher (perfecter, consummator) of faith and we look to Him as the perfect example of faith by how He lived a sinless life and laid down His life on the cross to atone for the sins of mankind. Praise the Lord!
