Starting with the 1964 campaign of Barry Goldwater, a massive conservative backlash against the liberalizing trends of American society grew in strength throughout the 1970s. The crowning achievement of this New Right was the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980. Reagan was the embodiment of the threefold conservative agenda of the time: Cold War conservatism, pro-business economics (aka, Reaganomics), and moral and religious conservatism. Reagan was able to deploy measures to achieve all three, whether through supply-side economics (trickle down economics) or the appointment of no less than four conservative judges to the Supreme Court. Ultimately, the election of Ronald Reagan can be seen as a fundamental rejection of the liberal gains of the 1960s and 1970s.
