This one was almost a write off - Woodturning a Cedar Vase

This piece of Australian Western Red Cedar had been left lying in a field for a long time. By the time I got it, it was on the verge of being too far gone to use it. The wood was soft and punky. I thought I’d try adding resin and putting it in the vacuum chamber. My hope was that the wood would suck up the resin and stabilise it. I was partially right!! The wood did soak up a little bit of the resin, but not as much as I hoped. As I turned the piece the wood was still extremely soft and I struggled to get a good cut on it, even with a freshly sharpened gouge or a carbide finisher. To get a smooth finish I had to sand from 40 grit through to 600. I’ve put a resin finish on this piece to stabilise the outside a bit more. The vase is 25cm in tall. Enjoy the video.
