THIS IS MY TRIED AND TRUE METHOD FOR MAKING ALL-IN-ONE GROW BAGS. TYPE OF GRAIN: white millet I know the way I do things is a little bit different from the general consensus of the internet hobbyist growers, and there is a reason for that. I grow for weight, and when you grow for weight, you do what works best. I don't use rye or popcorn, because not only is it not economical, those are bigger individual grains and therefore don't touch as many surfaces. Millet is smaller, and you can get exponentially more actual pieces of grain by volume than with any other grain, and smaller particles means more surface area. More surface area equals faster colonization times. TO SOAK OR NOT TO SOAK? not to soak I don't soak it because I don't need to. It is wildly inefficient to waste time and energy to soak my grain when I can just as easily add it in with my regular process. The grain doesn't seem to mind... MIXING vs LAYERING: Yes, I mix my bags before I sterilize. I'm sure the angry mob will be here any minute with their torches and pitchforks. Again, this is about efficiency. It doesn't make one bit of sense to use an all-in-one bag but to still have my process broken down into steps as is the case with layers. I do not see the value in allowing a spawn layer to colonize before mixing it with the substrate layer. I find that when mixing it, give or take a few days, my 5lb bags are typically fully colonized (all white and one stiff hunk o' stuff) one month almost to the day after inoculation, with me shaking my bags on days 5, 10 and 15 (basically every 5 days until there's more white than brown, at which time I just leave it alone until I open it up to put into fruiting conditions) ================================ AFFILIATE LINKS: If you purchase from one of these links, I'll receive a pennies on the dollar kickback from Amazon.
