Exercise during the lockdown period is an essential part for all dog owners and of course their dogs. In this video, I look at jogging, running, cycling and agility with dogs. The physical and mental benefits for both dog and the owner should not be underestimated, and this aspect is constantly looked at in my behaviour cases because I know how much benefit is derived from attaining the correct levels for the dog and of course the vast majority of dog owners know how enjoyable it is to become involved with their dog in a variety of ways. This video looks at a few basic areas such as a return to walking to heel basics on a loose lead with good levels of control before we then move on to a fast walk, a jog and then a run...of sorts. What's more, I show you how to introduce your dog to a bicycle and then to build up the dog's confidence so that it can walk or run alongside the rider on the bike. If this appeals to you and you have a dog that can manage such exercise, it is well worth the effort as the rewards and enjoyment are great. The video became much longer than I initially anticipated, but given that I'm guessing you're not strapped for time at present, I decided to leave a few outtakes and mistakes in to keep it real and for you to see how little Ruby learned and progressed in real-time. I hope you'll agree that she did very well. I confess it's my first agility session with Ruby, as that has been done by my other half so far, but we had fun (the whole point of the exercise!) and it gives me another opportunity to discuss in more detail how to introduce these various elements from scratch and to discuss the wider thinking that such new activities should be introduced gradually and with care. As I type, I realise I failed to include a few introductory drone takeoffs that I carried out with Ruby in the garden as this is something that I've been meaning to carry out given that I wanted to use a drone more in future footage. You can see that she is aware of it, but not spooked or fearful and it was great fun to shoot that part on the bike and in the field - again kept in rather than to edit it out. The key message is to try different things and when you have a dog that is calmly under your control you can then add in speed and variety and if you like a pushbike!
