Aimed at doctors (mostly anaesthetists) who will be asked to help out in regular or makeshift ICUs during the Covid-19 outbreak. Covers general considerations for ICU care and then specifics of managing a ventilated Covid-19 patient. Aimed at staff at Manchester University NHS FT but applicable to anyone asked to work in critical care during this pandemic. Unscripted but with reference to the daily reviews we conduct in our ICU, common problems we face that might not be immediately obvious to non-ICU staff and with reference to current (March 17th 2020) Covid-19 guidance, which of course may change. Views are my own and I didn't have our hospital's policy book in front of me, and so I advise you to familiarise yourself with local policies and procedures for wherever you are asked to work. Dr Brendan McGrath is a consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester, UK. Brendan likes teaching and has delivered updates like this to students, trainees and colleagues over the years.
